I am Davood Jafari: a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and performer born in 1982 in Shiraz, Iran. I began my musical journey at the age of 7 with the piano accordion. By 13, I had taken up the violin and the kamancheh, a traditional Persian string instrument.
My passion for music theory and composition led me to start playing the piano at 16. After completing high school, I enrolled at Tehran Art University, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in piano performance and subsequently a Master's degree in composition. I later pursued further studies in composition at the Salzburg Mozarteum, but decided to leave due to insufficient support I received. In 2018, I moved to the UK to enhance my artistic skills. After obtaining a second Master's degree in composition from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, I began working towards a PhD in composition at the same institution.
My primary artistic interest lies in blending Persian music and culture with Western musical traditions. During my Master's program, I initiated interdisciplinary projects centered on Persian culture and based my final thesis on Persian music. My PhD research primarily explores polyphonic composition rooted in Persian music. As a performer, I have played with various orchestras, including the Tehran Art University Orchestra and the Foozhan. In the UK, I have collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra alongside Persian composer Amir Konjani. I have also participated in the New Light Festival, a contemporary event at Trinity Laban, and have performed in numerous concerts across the UK.
For over 20 years, I have keenly been dedicated to music education as a university lecturer and private instructor. Known for my expertise in sight-singing, composition, harmony, counterpoint, and other relevant subjects, I have supported many sighted and visually impaired musicians in overcoming challenges and preparing for university studies worldwide. Most of my teaching is conducted online. I have also actively followed and used the latest technological developments to assist other blind musicians. I can call myself a professional Braille music notation expert and quite skilled in various music software applications, including Sibelius, MuseScore, Logic, and Reaper, on both Windows and Mac operating systems.
